Over the past 2 years, we have been working with the Seattle Tree Fruit Society to identify the varieties of apples in the more than 50 years old heirloom orchard at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in South Bellevue. As of this fall, they have all been identified!

Here are the names of the varieties in the orchard: Winesap, Ben Davis, Baldwin, Esopus Spitzenburg, Duchess of Oldenburg, Opalescent, Winter Banana, Transparent. The Transparents come and go in the early weeks of summer.

Over the past 2 years we have begun to prune the orchard and keep the fallen apples picked up. In just this short time we have noticed significantly more perfect and tasty apples. So we plan to keep at it.

If anyone might be interested in “adopting an apple tree” – we’d be interested in training you to prune and care for a tree and then you would have a major decision in how the fruit is harvested and used, with a good portion given to the food bank or other hungry local people hopefully! If this is of interestl, please contact Janet Farness at jkftahiti@comcast.net.

On Nov. 27, we had an apple tasting after church and that was fun and delicious. We tasted 7 varieties on Nov. 27! Meanwhile – enjoy the pictures of these handsome apples!
